Called the “security barrier” by some and the “apartheid wall” by others, there are few things that are more contentious than Israel’s security arrangements along the West Bank / Judea & Samaria. In this half or full-day tour, we will tackle this subject head-on with an in-depth exploration of the “Green Line,” military checkpoints, and Jewish settlements. Championed by many as the future border between Israel and an independent Palestinian State, we will discuss the history of this “border” since Israel’s War of Independence in 1948 through the 1967 Six-Day War, and Oslo Accords up to and including the present day.
We will stop at several overlooks along the way to better understand the topography and visit the divided town of Barta’a. This town, which is situated in an area that I refer to as “Limbo-Land” was historically split in half by the Green Line. Today it is officially divided yet remains entirely on the Israeli side of the security barrier.
In Barta’a, we will meet with locals and enjoy a traditional Arabic meal prior to continuing to the large Arab city of Um al Fahem. We will drive up to Mount Amir to overlook the city while discussing the importance of the Wadi Ara pass and the nearby Megiddo Junction for Israel’s security. From here we will head back to your ship or hotel.
A hands-on Arabic cooking class (sweet or savory) is available on the full-day tour for an additional cost.
