Home to no fewer than SIX major faith traditions and numerous other minorities, few cities in Israel – and even fewer in the Middle East – can compete with Haifa when it comes to cultural diversity and coexistence. Join Anthropologist, India expert, and licensed tour guide, Dr. Eyal Dujovny for a fascinating look at Haifa’s deep connections to the Indian subcontinent.
On this tour, we will meet with members of the Muslim Ahmadi community that originated in Qadian, India at their mosque in Haifa’s Kababir neighborhood. After a traditional lunch, we will head to the Bene Israel cultural center and meet with individuals from the ancient Bene Israel community that immigrated to Israel from Mumbai and the Konkan coast. There will be time allocated for discussions so that we can learn more about these communities and their cultural traditions as well as uncover what led both communities to make Haifa their home.
Lastly, we will end the tour at the Indian War Cemetery where we will learn about the heroic capture of the city by Indian lancers in World War I.
